Except for the exercises placed in the public domain,  Physlet® Physics, i.e., the text and associated script for the Illustrations, Explorations, and Problems in Physlet® Physics are copyrighted by Prentice Hall for the English language and copyrighted by Wolfgang Christian and Mario Belloni for all other languages.  The html pages for public domain Physlet-based exercises are marked on the Physlet Physics CD.

Physlets, that is the Java applets themselves but not the Physlet Physics scripts or narrative, are free for noncommercial use as described below.

Conditions of Use

Instructors may not post the exercises from Physlet Physics on the Web without express written permission from the Publisher for English-language narrative and from Wolfgang Christian and Mario Belloni for all other languages.  As stated on the Physlets website, Physlets (that is, the applets themselves) are free for noncommercial use.  Instructors are encouraged to author and post their own Physlet-based exercises.  In doing so, the text and script of Physlets-based exercises must be placed in the public domain for noncommercial use.  Please share your work! 

Authors who have written Physlet exercises and posted them on the Internet are encouraged to send us short e-mail with a link to their exercises.  Links will be posted on the Physlets page: http://webphysics.davidson.edu/applets/Applets.html. 

Under the conditions noted below, Physlets may be used for nonprofit, educational purposes without requesting permission from Wolfgang Christian or Davidson College:

  1. That the text and script of Physlet-based exercises, that is, problems that make use of Physlets to provide animation, visualization, or other types of educational content, be placed in the public domain for other noncommercial use.
  2. That Davidson College should be credited as the source of the Physlet on at least one HTML page of the instructional unit where these applets are being used. (An instructional unit would be a course or a collection of problems with a unifying theme.) The following logo or simply the name "Davidson College" with a link to the Davidson College Physlet archive serves this purpose.


  1. Credit does NOT have to be given on every problem or HTML page that contains a Physlet-based exercise.  We encourage instructors to make the integration of Physlets into their curriculum material as seamless as possible.
  2. PER publications containing results obtained using Physlets will reference the Physlets website.  Please share your work!  Authors who have written Physlet problems and posted them on the Internet are encouraged to send us short email with a link to their problems.  Links will be posted on the Physlets Sites page.

Physlets, i.e., the Java applets themselves, are authored by Wolfgang Christian and his students at Davidson College.  The term Physlet® is a registered trademark of Wolfgang Christian. 

Commercial use

Commercial use of Physlets®, that is the Java Applets, requires the written permission of Wolfgang Christian.
